Wesley University Lecturers Wants NUC To Sanction Institution Over Unpaid Salaries.

The Wesley University, Ondo in Ondo State has been owing her lecturers 12 months salaries. Lecturers could not bear this anymore and have called on the National Universities Commission to sanction the institution over this issue. The Lecturers has said that the school management was violating labour laws by owing them and will not hesitate to take the institution to court if nothing is done.

It was, however, gathered that some of the lecturers of the institution had been allegedly suspended by the university authority for refusing to sign bonds issued to them by the institution to regulate their work schedule.

A source said the lecturers who were suspended were asked to sign the agreements because they wanted to go for postgraduate programmes, but they refused on the grounds that bond signing was not included in the agreement they had with the school when they got appointment letters.

One of the concerned lecturers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told our correspondent that the institution was not operating in line with the regulations and guidelines of the Nigerian University Commission.

However, in his reaction, the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr. Samuel Akindele, said the allegation was not true, but confirmed that the institution owed some workers ‘few months’ salaries’ while claiming that some workers were not owed.

He said, “Some are owed five months’ salaries, some three, some one month while some are not owed. “

While confirming the suspension of some of the lecturers, he said the suspension only affected those lecturers that refused to sign the bond.

The varsity spokesman explained that the school sent a circular to academic staff who wanted to travel outside the country for postgraduate programmes for them to sign the bond with the university to regulate their work schedules.

“Although, I have not confirmed if they have been suspended or not but I know that some academic staff went for studies and the school said they  did not do what they ought to have done before they left for those programmes.”
