Educationist urges govt to improve on teacher training

The Group Head Teacher, Straitgate School, Magodo, Lagos, Mrs. Tolulope Orojo, has called on the federal and state governments to improve on training teachers and providing facilities in public schools.

She stated this in an interview with our correspondent as the school held its inter-house sports competition.

Orojo said, “The governments need to provide adequate training in order to have well-equipped teachers. Many public schools still lack modern learning facilities

During a voluntary work which I did in some public schools, I found out that you could have as many as 110 pupils in a class, with just two windows. You know, there cannot be proper learning in such a condition.”

The educationist, who also spoke on the rising cases of sexual abuse of children in the country, noted that what the citizens needed was a reorientation.

“In the past, the community used to serve as role model to children, but now it is a sad story. Children who are supposed to be in school now go out to be breadwinners. So, the society needs reorientation to place more value on children.”

Also, the school’s deputy head teacher, Mrs. Oniyide Arinola, said the sport competition was organised to encourage teamwork and the spirit of sportsmanship in pupils.

She said, “We want to build a total child, not just in his academics but also in his physical and spiritual aspects. That is the essence of this event.”
